The Best Window for your Home Remodel

Replacing your windows is something you may not often think about. From cutting down your energy bill to completely transforming your curb appeal, they can actually make a shockingly large difference to you. With that in mind, we’re providing a clear way to see through the window replacement process this week.

First things first—how do you know if your windows need to go? It primarily comes down to function and style.

Functional reasons to replace your windows

1. Do you struggle to open your windows? Do they stick? Maybe you can’t open them at all!

While your daily window struggle is inconvenient and frustrating, it’s also a safety hazard. In the event of a fire, you may have a dire need to open your windows. We often see these types of issues coming from windows that are warped and may need replacing.

2. You see fog between the glass.

Fog inside your window is an indication that your seal has been compromised. This is normal, as seals wear over time. The older your window gets, the more likely you’ll need to replace it.

3. Where is that chill coming from?

If you notice a draft or feel a little cold when you walk by any of your windows, there might be a  problematic gap in your window. Your energy bill is likely suffering, considering your AC or heater is having to do extra work with all that air escaping! Save money on energy and replace your windows sooner rather than later.

Replacing your windows for style

When it comes to style, some windows coordinate with certain decor better than others. To make the best decision tailored to your home, you’ll want to discuss your options with a qualified contractor. Surprisingly, windows come in a wide range of options — probably more than you expected.

Below is a list of window types in order from least to most expensive to help you start your window shopping journey.

  • Aluminum

Aluminum windows are typically the least expensive option. Of course, you get what you pay for. A major weakness with this low cost option is that they aren't the best at saving energy, especially if they lack thermal insulation within the frame.

  • Single hung

With a movable lower sash and a fixed upper sash, single-hung windows are excellent choices for enhancing security when installed on lower floors.

  • Double-hung

A double-hung window provides enhanced ventilation as it can be opened from both the top and bottom. Naturally, this convenience comes at a slightly higher cost compared to single-hung windows.

  • Vinyl

Requiring minimal upkeep, vinyl windows offer extended defense against outdoor conditions. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that they don’t allow for as much customization as other window types.

  • Wood with Aluminum Cladding

Wood windows have a classic and traditional look that never goes out of style. The one downside - they need the most care and maintenance on the inside compared to other types of windows but can stand up to the elements. They do tend to be a more expensive option.

  • Sliding

Horizontal sliding windows glide along a stationary track, opening both to the left and right.

  • Fiberglass

Fiberglass windows aren't as common or easy to find as other choices, but they are a strong option and don’t need much looking after. They handle different weather conditions well and offer great insulation against outside temperatures.

  • Bay and Bow

Bay windows are generally characterized by a three-dimensional, three-pane layout, whereas bow windows showcase a more pronounced curved design.

The prices range and vary throughout the options of windows above for several reasons.Quantity of how many you need to replace, the size and type of each window you choose, and the labor all factor in.
